Neonatal meningitis (transplacental infection) after antibiotics therapy
Key words : Listeria monocytogenes, transplacental infection
zoonosis
The subarachnoid space is fibrotic, and foamy macrophages invade the destroyed parenchyma of the spinal cord (HE). No active inflammation is seen any longer.
Listeria antigens are demonstrated in the cytoplasm of foamy macrophages in the spinal cord parenchyma (immunostaining).
Immunoelectron micrograph of the foamy cell cytoplasm, demonstrating that rod-like structures are immunoreactive for Listeria antigen (pre-embedding method using a paraffin section).
Reference case 102A Listeria-induced villitis, with abscess formation seen in the placenta at the 23rd week of gestation.. Infection of L. monocytogenes to the placenta can result in transplacental neonatal meningitis (HE). Microbial culture from the amniotic fluid and blood of the mother and neonate was positive.
Reference case 102A Listeria-induced endophlebitis of the umbilical cord at the 23rd of gestation. Endophlebitis indicates the state of listerial septicemia (HE). The livestock can be a healthy reservoir of this Gram-positive rods showing beta-hemolysis.
