Dermatophytes are categorized into three ecological groups. Anthropophilic (affecting human), zoophilic (affecting animals) and geophilic (saprophytes in the soil). Anthropophilic fungi, such as T. rubrum, cause chronic recurrent infection (including athlete's foot), while the latter two cause acute severe infection to human.
